William Borden (1887–1913)
William Borden (1887–1913) – Heir. Missionary. Man Who Said No to the World, and Yes to God.
William Whiting Borden was born into immense privilege, the heir of the Borden family fortune. But unlike many of his peers, who saw wealth as a passport to comfort, Borden viewed it as a test of stewardship. After a post-graduation trip around the world, where he witnessed firsthand the spiritual and material poverty across continents, his heart turned toward unreached people groups.
At Yale, his life became a catalyst: he organized daily prayer groups that eventually drew over 1,000 students (out of 1,300 total), igniting a spiritual movement that spread far beyond campus. Upon graduation, he turned down lucrative business offers, instead channeling his entire inheritance into missionary causes.
He enrolled at Princeton Theological Seminary, preparing for missions among Muslim communities in inland China. Before arriving, he stopped in Cairo to learn Arabic. Within months, spinal meningitis struck, and Borden died at just 25.
On his desk and in his Bible were three phrases that later became his legacy:
“No reserves. No retreats. No regrets.”
